Rube Goldberg Machine

Quick Intro

Rube Goldberg Machine Activities challenge kids and families to design and build playful chain-reaction machines that complete simple tasks in creative, over-the-top ways. Using everyday objects, participants explore cause and effect, motion, energy, and problem-solving as each step triggers the next. When done with family and friends, these activities encourage collaboration, communication, and lots of laughter as ideas are shared, tested, and refined together. Building Rube Goldberg machines builds patience, creativity, and critical thinking while turning trial and error into a fun, memorable learning experience everyone can enjoy. 🎢✨

More Info on Building Rube Goldberg Machines

Building Rube Goldberg machines involves designing overly complex, multi-step contraptions that complete a very simple task—such as turning off a light, popping a balloon, or ringing a bell. These machines use chains of actions that rely on basic physics and engineering principles like gravity, momentum, cause and effect, levers, pulleys, ramps, and simple machines. The focus isn’t efficiency, but creativity, sequencing, and understanding how small actions trigger larger reactions. Rube Goldberg machines encourage experimentation, planning, and problem-solving while making learning playful and imaginative.

Friends and families can learn together by designing and building Rube Goldberg machines using everyday household items like dominoes, cardboard, marbles, string, cups, and toys. Working as a group, participants can brainstorm steps, assign sections of the machine, test connections, and troubleshoot when things don’t work as expected. Challenges such as limiting materials, requiring a minimum number of steps, or setting a theme add excitement and collaboration. These shared projects build teamwork, patience, and critical thinking while turning engineering concepts into a fun, memorable hands-on experience.

Helicopter exploration

Helicopter exploration

When I was working for a helicopter tour company, I had an opportunity for my kids to jump in and see the controls. I think I was just as excited as they were to get into one, haha.

Meteor Crater fun

Meteor Crater fun

They found some great ways to make it fun to learn about a big dent in the ground. And it sounds like they've updated the kids' area so we will have to check it out again

The summer Colton tried soccer and decided it wasn't really for him

My silly trampoline kid

My silly trampoline kid

This kid is always dressing up or creating a costume or plushie, so it's a common occurrence for him to be dressed up or have a plushie in his arms no matter where he is

Checking out a helicopter

Checking out a helicopter

I worked for a helicopter tour company in Sedona for a while and so my kids got a chance to climb inside and take a look.

Batting Cages at Full Swing in Prescott AZ

Full Swing in Prescott Arizona has batting cages, arcade games, a trampoline bungee jump, and some snack foods. The last time I played softball was in high school, so it was fun to test out my skills. This is my 12 year old, who's never played on a team, trying it out.
